John Charles played in both legs of this 1958 World Cup Finals qualification play-off match. Wales won both games, in Tel Aviv and Cardiff
Rated by many as the greatest all-round footballer ever to come from Britain,he was equally adept as a forward or defender due to his strength, pace, technique, vision, ability in the air and eye for goal
He played for Wales at the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden but Charles got injured and Wales were eventually knocked out by Brazil in the quarter-finals thanks to a goal by Pelé and the Brazilians went on to win the competition. Wales manager Jimmy Murphy said that "with John Charles in the side we might have won”.
